WKOK- Roundtable Autism Series-
Continues to help create Autism Awareness and Education

The Autism Series began in 2007 on WKOK Roundtable:

Mark Lawrence came to me and offered his time and mic to help me in spreading the word about autism awareness.  The first of the series went so well and so effortlessly he suggested a series.
That was more than three years ago and to date there have been 9 installations of WKOK's Autism Advocacy Series on Autism.  Many of these broadcasts are available on podcasts and others may be obtained by contacting WKOK and requesting an archive in CD format.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mark Lawrence for his continued support in offering me the chance to continue my efforts to promote autism education, awareness and advocacy.  As is the case in many of the wonderful people I have met in my life and worked with in matters related to relevant and passionate issues, I now consider Mark one of my dear friends.  Mark is one of the funniest people I know and can deliver a one liner that usually cracks me up - we all need that kind of person in our lives, especially those of us helping to assist others who are exhausted and overwhelmed like families touched by autism related disorders.

I also want to thank all the wonderful guests who take the time to share their experiences, expertise and support in creating autism awareness, education and acceptance.

Visual Senses and Autism
-
This show focuses on
the vision differences and how vision as a sense can have a significant impact on a child's development, behaviors and daily experiences.

Vision is typically our first experience with the information we take into our brains about what is going on in the world around us.  When visual differences or delays occur such as in a child with an autism related disorder, this can directly effect behavior and the child's development.

Dr. Ciummei offers his expertise and in-depth explanations about the importance of a qualitative, comprehensive eye examination early in a child's life, while explaining how some of these differences occur and present themselves.
Guests include Dr. John Ciummei, Wynwood Eye Clinic, Winfield, PA.
Listen to the show:  Roundtable for air the week of 03-11

Mark Lawrence, Susan Colón and Dr. John Ciummei
discuss Visual Senses and Autism.

This has been one of our most requested tapings and is fascinating and one of my favorites because it takes a deeper look at root causes of behavior as it relates to the visual senses - which is why I chose this title.

Medical Insurance
-
This discussion looks at medical insurance coverage and lack of coverage for autism related disorders including medical assistance.  Issues involving coverage and reimbursement in addition to suggested areas for improvement to better serve individuals with Autism are discussed and explained.
Guests include Ann House, Kidswork Therapy Center and Matt Ostrowsky, Ostrowsky Insurance.

Mark Lawrence - a partner in creating autism awareness.

'What is Autism?'  The series just continued from there as topics in Autism continue to be an area of interest for many people living in the listening area, as well as across the nation.

Mark hosted a previous Round Table discussion four years ago on autism, organized by Stacey Piecuch, (a parent and active force in our area) making Mark the first local Radio Executive to take an interest in Autism issues.

I ask that those of us who are grateful for people like Mark, to send him a few words of thanks in the form of an e-mail to let him know just how important this educational and informative series is to parents and caregivers of individuals with autism. (Contact Mark)
